Teaching Philosophy

I believe that classrooms should be interactive and the input should be meaningful to the students as Krashen stated in his input hypothesis (1985). I believe that, through education, an individual will acquire the vital skills and tools that are necessary to make one's life a success. In order to drive students to success, a teachers' role is very important. I believe that as a teacher, I should be able to identify students' needs, provide whatever is required, guide them to the right path, and encourage them all the way through. I believe that, as a teacher, it is my duty to support students with a concrete philosophy of education.

As a child, I can remember telling everyone that I wanted to be a teacher. However, when I grew up, my dream kept changing. When I entered the field of education as an English teacher, I realized my dream and was able to share my acquired knowledge with students. My desire grew stronger while taking the Masters in TESOL at the Graduate School of Sookmyung Women's University. I hope to continue to share the lessons that I have learned along the way and encourage my students to reach for the stars and realize their dreams.

I believe a positive classroom environment gives students the emotional freedom to learn, build relationships, and take risks. My classroom is a place where students make a personal connection with the information taught and apply the knowledge to a variety of experiences. For this reason, I dediate a considerable amount of time planning teaching lessons with topics, activities and tasks that my students’ favor or consider meaningful for their purpose of studying. In addition, I include interactive activities in my lessons in order to provide my students with plenty of opportunities to produce output. Moreover, by enthusiastically engaging students in fascinating lessons that address each child's learning style, I believe that students will achieve academic success and build the self-confidence they need to continue taking risks during the learning process.

I understand the importance of choosing appropriate instructional strategies which match with the students' needs and language proficiency. Thus, I believe that it is extremely important to determine each child's dominant learning style and continually monitor each student's academic progress through a variety of assessments such as the NEAT rubrics and the ACTFL rubrics. Furthermore, I believe that building a strong relationship with students out of class is as important as observing students during lessons in order to understand them better. Because of this, I often spend my break time talking with students.

In conclusion, my ultimate goal as a teacher is to make students enjoy learning a foreign language with an educational environment that is positive and encouraging. I hope to provide students with high quality instruction that meets the individual needs of each student. Consequently, I hope that I can help students take confident strides toward their dreams.
