Reason for foundation

These days we get to see more foreigners visiting Korea for various reasons. It means that our society is becoming more and more globalized. So, we realized that cultural exchanges and improving foreign language ability is an essential element for modern people. However, there was no club or group in school that helps students with outdoor activities, facing the real world. That’s why we made up our mind to make one to improve ourselves. Bae Hyun teacher, who teaches English conversation here in Pung-dong middle school, is in charge with our club.

Club activities

Our club’s merit is that we progress outdoor activities including interview and campaign for foreigners. For example, we interviewed about problem of Dokdo ownership, homosexuality and military sexual slavery at the lake park. There, we met countless people with various perspectives. Also, our club conducted a campaign for introducing Korea to foreigners in In-sa-dong. Many foreigners were interested in our activity. Students had so much fun there having conversation with foreigners by interviewing them.

Not only we just interviewed them but also through lots of researches and investigations from preparation, we were able to be aware of more social issues. It became the opportunity for students to learn more about our country Korea and other foreign countries.

Although this club has been only a year, we hope it will remain for more students. We believe that joining this club will be a great experience and memory for your school life. It might be harsh at first, but it will certainly pay you off. As saying goes “After a storm comes calm.” All your efforts here will make you more confident and competent in your English. So why don’t you join our club right now?

Why 'Voice Korea'?

As the globalization is accelerated, communication through the culture between nations becomes popular as a diplomatic strategy. In addition, ‘Korean Wave’ sweeps across the world and Korean history distortion has been occurred. To improve and solve these matters, we thought that knowing about Korea first is an essential way. Since practicing this individually and abstractly is so hard, we started ‘Voice Korea’ club to do it more systematically.

The main programs of this club are selecting the topic, preparing the interview in groups, and practicing interview and campaign activity. By interviewing and doing a campaign, club members could gain not only the development of communication skills but also the broad perspective. Moreover, members could advance the ability to have an attitude toward acceptance. A chance to experience these activities would be so helpful for every student who is interested in international issues or becoming a global leader in various ways: diplomat, reporter or politician, etc. Join club ‘VOICE KOREA’ and come up to your DREAM.

On October 27, 2015, students of “Voice Korea” visited Insadong, a place where tourists and locals often visit to experience the traditional culture of South Korea. The abundant traditional antique shops and streets of Insadong were bursting with people from all over the world. Divided into groups, the students interviewed foreigners, distributed pamphlets, and carried placards that said, “Go, Republic of Korea!” By virtue of the interested foreigners, the interview went successfully. When we questioned the foreigners why they decided to visit Korea, numerous foreigners answered that they were attracted by Korea’s fascinating culture and language. Two French women stated that they visited Korea because of their eagerness to learn Korean. They added that their dream is to become a Korean teacher in France. In addition, an African American woman from the U.S. answered that her affection for Korean traditional food was the main reason she made up her mind to visit South Korea. Lots of Chinese and Japanese tourists were interested in the traditional markets and shopping centers of Korea such as Myeong-dong. After the interview, the students recommended renowned tourist attractions and restaurants, and even gave out recipes for the traditional food to the foreigners. Two children from Russia seemed extremely delighted when we gave them traditional cookies and recommended K-Pop music. Through participating in this meaningful activity, we were able to learn that a large number of foreigners were interested in Korean food, music, and language. On top of that, we were pleased to spend a worthwhile time spreading the beauty of Korea, as our heart glowed with patriotism.
